The Doctor Who pinball machine was released in 1992 by Bally/Midway, based on the classic British science fiction television series. Featuring the first seven Doctors, the game is known for its fast-paced gameplay and a unique “Time Expander” mini-playfield. It has gained a following among pinball collectors and fans of the show.
Gameplay and rules
The Seven Doctors: At the start of each ball, players can choose one of the seven Doctors (from William Hartnell to Sylvester McCoy), each of whom provides a different rule modification or scoring bonus. Players can also collect all seven Doctors during gameplay to combine their special abilities for higher scores.
The Time Expander: A key feature of the game is the multi-level Time Expander, a central mini-playfield that rises and lowers. It has three phases:
Lock Mode: Lock two balls to start the next phase.
Target Mode: Hit a series of targets to progress.
Jackpot Mode: Shoot balls through three gates to collect Jackpots and Super Jackpots to defeat the Daleks.
Enemies: The game’s story involves battling the Master, Davros, and the Daleks.
Other features: The table includes a model of the TARDIS, from which the ball emerges, and a looping cliffhanger ramp that can increase your playfield multiplier.
