Eight Ball Deluxe is a classic and highly sought-after pinball machine originally released by Bally in 1981. It is known for its fast, challenging single-ball play and engaging pool-hall theme, enhanced by early voice synthesis. Its straightforward ruleset makes it accessible to beginners, while its difficult shots keep experienced players coming back for “just one more game”
Key gameplay features
The core objective of Eight Ball Deluxe is to “sink” the pool balls by knocking down drop targets.
Bonus-focused scoring: The game emphasizes building up a high bonus, which carries over between balls. Bonus advances are worth more during the first ball.
Drop targets: The playfield features two sets of drop targets:
A main bank of seven drop targets representing the balls (solids or stripes) for a player.
Four in-line drop targets that increase the bonus multiplier, up to 5x.
Completing the rack: Once all seven pool ball targets are knocked down, the 8-ball target lights up. Sinking the 8-ball completes the rack and collects a large bonus.
Extra shots: Other scoring opportunities include:
A kick-out hole behind the 8-ball for collecting the bonus.
Four lanes at the top and in lanes (A-B-C-D) that, when completed, spot pool ball targets.
A high-value shot behind the inline drops.
Voice callouts: For its era, the game was advanced for its use of voice callouts, which include the classic line, “Quit talking and start chalking!”.
